When I was a in school, particularly elementary school, we did a lot of memorizing that seemed pointless. Yesterday, I was making a post here, looked at it and thought something is wrong, I think there are too many prepositions all in a row. That led me to wonder if I was right that all the words were prepositions, and I remembered the following that we had to memorize in 5th grade:
With on for after at by in
Against instead of near between
By over up from down below
through over up according to
athwart across beyond about
Before behind within without.
Are all preopositions
Picture this done in sing-song over and over by 10-11 year olds and you will understand why I remember it over 20 years later! lol
Mind you, this is still useless knowledge, as knowing the words are prepositions really does nothing for me.
Do you have anything like this that you remember from school?

This is related, but not actually something we memorized as a way to remember something else. I will be 51 in a few days and I actually remember the little square black crayon box we were given in first grade that held 8 fat crayons. I remember that we had to memorize the colors in the order that she dictated: red, yellow, blue, green, purple, brown, orange, black. Now I can't remember what I had for dinner yesterday, but I sure do remember that. Isn't that odd? [Ldyjarhead]
Sherlock--that is funny that you still remember that about your 2nd grade teacher. It's good that you memorized the preamble, that is something I never did learn; I know we studied it at some point but never memorized, and I do think everyone should know it. Hmmm I wonder if kids are memorizing anything in school these days, or just looking everything up on the internet? Maybe that is a subject for another post... [fluffysue]
i remember taking french in school (we live in canada and canada is officially bi-lingual, so when i was young you had to take french in grades 7 & 8; now it starts in grade 4) and i still remember some french (plus, our daughters have helped with that some) [cher913]
That's great that you still remember some French, it's always helpful to learn another language. I think the U.S. is one of the few countries that does not require a second language to be learned. (although it is usually a requirement to get into college, so a lot do study one in high school.) [fluffysue]
naaaa.I dont remmber any now fluffy...lol!,but I remmber some songs like .. I have tow hands the left and the right..rasp [baleleng2008]
I am glad you remember that song...just in case you ever forget that! LOL [fluffysue]
I don't think it is purely memerization. Iy is only applicable to poems we study. It is merely on how do you remember what have you learned from your teachers. if you are really listening attentively and participating on class discussion. It is a test on how good is your memery. RTecalling to what had happened on that day. If you can't do remember anything in school. What is the used of attending your class. we do remmeber things we do outside our classroom. Then why not all tghe things we have to learne. [alouconui]
When I was in elementary school, we learned a lot of things by memory. They really did not encourage us to think and discuss, just repeat back what we learned. I suppose it was usefull as some things did eventually sink in. It wasn't until high school that I had teachers that let us actually think instead of just memorize. [fluffysue]
" See Hopkins Cafe Mighty good" Thats how our science teacher made us memorise and learn the complete plant experiment. Translated, it refers to C H O P K I N S Ca Fe Mg a listing of elements and components that is supposed to be what a healthy plant needs to grow healthy. Now I am doing my small garden, and it has continued to remind me that plants need the following; C = Carbon, H = Hydrogen O = Oxygen, K = Potassium , I = iodine , N = Nitrogen, S = Sulphur, Ca = Calcium, Fe = iron and Mg = Magnesium !!! Clever teacher ;) Sadly, he passed on many years ago now. But the memory of what he was and how he taught us lingers on.. [suria5231]
That is great that your teacher came up with a good way to remember that! And I suppose it is still useful to you if you are gardening! :) [fluffysue]
nope since I never mugged things up... [blackhole]
I understood how it is and then wrote on my own only memory poems I memorized... [blackhole]
Yea. The one thing I remember most vividly is the Maths TimeTable. I had to learn and memorize them when I was in kindergarten. lol I love numbers and maths so it was great fun for me. [poohgal]
In Kindergarten.. We learn the real easy ones like 2X1=2.. 2X2=4.. lol [poohgal]
That's something I didn't heard of. But I think it's quite cute. At least you could still remember it until now Ya, we do remember something we learned in school, even though it's almost 20 years from now. I was in science stream when I was in secondary school, so I still remember a little portion of scientific and mathematical theorem and basic principles. Example, the Pythagoras theorem and the Archimedes Theorem. [cheongyc]
Somehow, I could remember this theorem until now. It could be because I learned it in my first lesson of Geomatry. My father taught me when I was in primary school. I was supposed to learn it in early secondary school. If I am not wrong, the theorem is discovered by Egyptian thousands of years ago. How amazing! [cheongyc]
I remember that to recall the Great Lakes, it spells HOMES H-Huron O-Ontario M-Michigan E-Erie S-Superior I grew up on Lake Huron so I have always used this. We live in the West now so I taught my daughter and used it too! [laglen]
Now that I think about it, I learned that too, but it didn't really stick! Maybe because I've always lived on the east coast. My sense of geography is pretty pitiful. [fluffysue]
a smattering of things, but mainly the multiplication tables. though to be perfectly honest, "schoolhouse rock" did more for me then the teacher did.i can't tell you how many times my butt was saved by that "we the people" song lol [scarlet_woman]
