How Can I Be More Involved With My Sons New School

My soon to be 5 year old will be starting Kindergarten in September and I am wondering how can I get more involved "as a parent" with his school? This is all new to me so I'm sorry if this question sounds dumb LOL

Hi maddysmommy, There will be a lot you can do to get involved! Depending on your time you have, (if you are working) the school usually lets you know, they always need someone for something. I do admit it's been 20 years since my youngest started Kindergarten, but I'm sure they still have PTA meetings (parent teachers association) you can join, go to meetings once a month, volunteer for various things & committees. They used to have "room mothers" that would bring snacks for children, or parties, I think they do things different now. Also, I think they always need parents to help with field trips, etc. The best thing to do is call the school, they will be glad you are willing to help, and get involved! [Heavensent53]
Great ideas, thanks Heavensent! I will call the school on my return from our little break to Connecticut. I've also wanted to try volunteering and its unlikely I will be doing anything else but staying at home when he does go to school (as it may only be part time instead of full time - waiting for the school to confirm by end of May) then that will determine how much time I have on my hands. I am looking foward to taking part and starting with the PTA would be great! [maddysmommy]

I am in the same boat as you..my son wil be 5 in June and starts Kindergarten in August,,but,he has been going to head start 4 days a week for 5 hrs days since he was 3 yrs old..and hes loved it,So im kinda a bit experienced when it comes to getting involved,When you first meet the teacher..ask them how you can be more involved..what you can do and all that and im sure they would be glad to have you as a helper some days,,especially around holidays..when they have there little doings,,lots of luck! Great, thanks cloud-kicker, I will talk to the teacher as well and ask how I can help at the school :) [maddysmommy]

Ask the school administration. That's the easiest. Most school have some parent help group in place. They are more than happy for you to help out as volunteers. [lordwarwizard]
Thanks liyan I'll be sure to ask them when he starts school in Sept. I'm excited for him. thanks for responding! [maddysmommy]

Well, make yourselves comfortable enough to take more time to go ahead and spend time.It is the most cruicial time to lay a brick in the foundation of your kids school life. All the best !!! Sadanand [sadanand]

I should consider you as a great personality. No indivividual knows everything. there is the saying "jack of all trades and master of none" you are a master of a trade and this isn't your trade so you should be confident to ask. Right, the parent is the first teacher of every child, to prepare you child for a kindergarten, you could start teaching the names of some of the items in your house, A,B,C'S and how to write these letters if you can. you could be a reminder to your kid after school by asking him/her what she/he has been taught and also let the child recall what the teachers taught on that day. you'll never regret the pace at which your child will be going. lol good luck. My son turned 5 in March and will be starting kindergarden in August. We are going to try to be involved by going to PTA meetings and volunteering. I also plan to participate in the Fall festival activities and field trips. [magnet]
Yup, I am going to too :) thanks magnet for your response! [maddysmommy]
