How Much (many Years) School Should Be Mandatory

How many years do you think kids should have to go to school? Do you believe kids should have to finish high school? do you think people should be required to attend college as well? That's such a hard question. It would be great if everyone could go to college, but there are certain circumstances that do not allow everyone to do it. For example, money reasons, time reasons, other responsibilities.

It depends what their Goals are. If they want to earn more money, they must go to college to earn degrees or certificate programs. If they just want to make a living at fast food restaurants, then they don't need anything at all. [ThorLui]
Education and overall personality don't come by cramming books. I don't think by getting a hi-fi degrees and education upto certain age can make a good amount of money. Its a ongoing journey and we learn most of things by experience it rather than taught in schools and colleges. Life is a luck and brain combination game, you can win it only if you have these two important stuffs within you. But you should have certain goal in life that makes your career a direction. They are about to change the law in this country so that children have to stay at school until they are 18 unless they are carers for their parents in which case they can leave at 16. I think leaving at 16 as it is at the moment is fine. Some people are suited for education and so they should be able to go and find a job if they prefer. However there should be a minimum qualification they should get such as basic maths and english so that they are able to lok after themselves. [michelledarcy]
I agree that some people are better suited to entering into the workforce vs staying in school, but I think dropping out at 16 doesn't necessarily mean kids have the basic math and english skills required to survive here. I think everyone should be equipped with at least a high school diploma. As for college, that is much more subjective, and unless the cost of higher education sudddenly plummets, it's not feasable to make undergraduate degrees mandatory. [quinine]

If they would make it mandatory to attend college, they would have to make it free. So I dont see college ever being mandatory. However we always encouraged our kids from toddler up to go to college. We encouraged high grades and college graduate jobs. They both did go to college. Our youngest has a major in Political science and will finish her grad classes soon. She now works for the University. Our oldest has put her career on hold while she raises her 2 toddlers but she too went to college. I think every child shoud go to college but it should not be mandatory as it is too expensive. High School graduate should be mandatory. [villageanne]
I agree with you. If they made college free.... but, I don't think that will happen any time soon. [rachelcaron]

I think that everyone should have to get their high school diploma. College may not be for everyone - depending on what you want to do. If you have the oppertunity you should go - but that should not be manditory. [MakDomMom]
I agree. You need a high school diploma, even if all you want is to work fast food - you still need enough education to handle basic math, be able to file your taxes, learn how to interact with people, etc. But who aspires to that? You need enough basic skills to be valuable in the work force SOME WHERE. If not, you end up part of the system - the welfare system, which often pushes people to the streets. if you want a CAREER - you probably need more education thatn high school. That's not to say that a 4 year college degree is needed, but possibly vocational training, an associates degree or something. To be competitive IN the competitive job market, you need education - it shows more than book learning, it shows DRIVE to succeed. However, if you want a professional career, whether it is business, engineering, science, etc - you need MORE than even a bachelor's degree. [cassidy22]

I think the school system is good as it is. Twelve years of school and if they can go to college too. Nowadays we need more education if we want to succeed in life and besides some jobs require that you have college background too. [mimatexas]

I think that everything is fine except we should start kindergarten a year earlier in life and get out of high school and into college a year earlier as well. It seems that would work so much better and a lot of kids go to college halfway through their senior year anyway with all the people graduating early lately. [chazdubs]

I think that kids should have to go to school K-12 atleast. I mean just to have the basics of an education. As far as college, I don't think anyone should HAVE to go, but it would be nice of the majority could go. Just for the fact that if you go to school, you have that education forever & you'll never lose it-- more money etc. But, I know that alot of people aren't fortunate enough to be able to afford, or have the time to attend. So, to make something like that mandatory wouldn't really be fair... but, I wish everyone had the opportunity to go & be able to afford it. I went to school and then college & have a degree and even though I'm not using it, I still have the education so when I want to go to work when my kids are grown, I can. [mommy2taylor1]
We have to make sure that children are up to speed before we pass them up as well. We shouldnt have kids who cant read or do math. I think the standard needs to be able to understand the government documents that they need to fill out to get a job and pay taxes. [msqtech]

I definitely think kids should finish high school. I would prefer 2 years of college being jobs are so competitive nowadays. [kmitch84]

I think that everyone should go to school even thouse that from some circumstances could not go to college or univercity, becouse there is a period in kids life that they are not enugh adolescent, but after that period they whant to go to college but it's to late for them and that is very pity. [as2006]

i think 5 years atleast b/c kids understand some thing so it will prefer that to finish high school yes people like to require attend college as well [mshoaibbimcs]

Well it all depends on how the children are progressing at school, but with today's living in my country it is best to go to school until at least they have their high school certificate so as to give them a chance in the work force, one of my daughters passed this test with a 90% I was very happy with that result but we never pushed her to stay at school and she could go into any university and get a diploma in teaching. [kathy77]

I learn more here !Thank you [evilunion34]

I think 13 years. 13 years so that on their 13th year which will be freshman year of college, they will have a taste of what college is like. Also, if it's mandatory 13 years, high school kids will be prepared for college. I remember going to high school in Nevada and there were the college bound high school kids and the high school kids that just want to graduate from high school. The college bound kids would have the harder subjects like Anatomy, Calculus to better prepare them for college while the ones who weren't college bound could graduate knowing only Chemistry and Geometry. If the government makes it mandatory, maybe they will pay for the 13th year as well, then the kids can really decide if it's for them or not and if they want to continue, they have to pay for it themselves. I know not a lot of people go to college so this would probably help that. Just my ambitious thoughts running wild... [marief2rnurse]

i think that it sholud be mandatoy for 10 to 12 years.cuz it efffects so much on a child mind.and this is the age of learning so i suggest to take scool for 10 years minimum [Shujakhan]

i think it would be best if they went to college but you cant make anyone do anything i dropped out in the begining of 10th grade but went on to get my G.E.D and vocational training. so it just depends on the person if they are strong willed they will contrinue on with their education [shybutreal2003]

I think the best is 10 years. Do you really use the stuff you learned during your high school days?? [koh2007]

As far as my view is concern, I feel that Children should be given atleast 10 years of High school coaching and this practice is being followed in India.by this they get to know better understanding of basic concepts. [10061954]

It matters what country you are talking about. In India, there are 10 high school years (in some cities), and then college... In some other states there are 12 high school years and then college... In the USA, there are 12 school years, Elementary, Junior High and then 4 years of High School......So I think the education is better for 12 years of High School like that... giving a child much time to acquire good amount of knowledge before going to colelge??? And attending college is on the kids dependanc... He can attend the college if he or she wants to... there are many who don;t go to college because they want to make some money by working.. [chhaganbhujbad]

I think kids should go to school untill they get all of the grades as more and more kids are leaving school early and they cannot get jobs. [ryanwelsh]

I think that kids should go to school when they are 3 years old it's because it is the best time to start the learning. And i think people should be required to finish high school, because it teach us the basic things of the world and it help us in the following life. Finally, I also think that if possibe, anyone should attend college because in the college we learn in a particular area and we will able to be a professional and to contribute the society. [samuelchr]

I think they should make it mandatory to graduate from high school. I understand that getting a college education today is so important, but a lot of people just can't afford it. So unless the state is willing to pay for it just won't work. [cabergren]

I believe that kids should finish high school at least. College is optional but I would encourage everyone to go to college to further their knowledge and gain mastery on a particular field of learning. [here_for_you]

well if you whant to have a good job and money you have to good some good years to school ,,ike 15 years or more , it depends and what you whant to to in the futuer:)) [yahooguy]

In the UK, all kids have to stay until they are 16, and that is soon to be raised to 18. Personally, I think that is ridiculous! For every kid that wants to learn, and go on to College, there will be plenty of others who are not in the slightest bit academic. By 16 they are going to want to start working, and earning money. They may want to work with their hands, and get a practical apprenticechip somewhere. They will be bored with school, because academic life just doesn't interest them, and making them stay will cause them to be bored, and disruptive in my opinion, and distract the kids who want to learn, and stop them from doing so. I think 15 or 16 is old enough, unless someone is highly academic, and wants a University place. [rosie_123]

schooling is mandatory to polish the mind.according to me schooling should be upto 10 years thereafter one should be admitted to college. [dipzilla]

I believe it should be mandatory to finish high school. Really at that young age most of us don't know what we want to do with our lives, so why not get at least 12 years eductation finished in the process. Too many kids are dropping out early and then are stuck when they finally decide what they want to do. I am saving up for my kids college already (they are only 4 and 1) so when they get to that age they can go forth with it and not have to worry about cost. I won't pressure my kids to go to college but I am going to do my best to encourage it. It gives you a lot more options in life. [leese29]

Personally, I think that everyone should be forced to have an education. Knowledge is what keeps our civilization going and advancing. If everyone knew, then everyone would not have to live thinking that they are alone, or that they are useless. [tetsero]

STUDY that is one of the main think in our life. We can study as much we can, There is no limit for that. " IF U DONT STUDY U WILL LEAN, IF U WELL STUDIED U WILL WIN" . Knowledge is the main think. From where that is not a matter. From school,College ...from any where. And also the school college time is the best time to remember in our life ...So dont miss it. Anoop [anoopsu]

I think the way it is now is OK. I do wish that college could be more affordable though so more than the rich can go and get a degree. However, if you want it bad enough, it will happen. [chevez]

I think, to start, with we need to have the kids in school more. At lest 8 hours, and no early days on Wednesdays. And get rid of the standardized testing. . Kids are not learning anything in school as it is nowdays, most wont make it to college. Here in the US the educational program has become so governmentized that the kids are no longer learning what they need to know, but only what some beurocrat has decided they should know. . Ask kids today what happened in 1492, ask them when WWI was, or even WWII. But they know how to answer questions to pass a test...not hat they know what is really on the test. They have no idea who the Supreme Justices are, or what the preamble to the constitution says(i dont think any of the civil right activits know much about the constitution either). If you get them to watch World News, they most likely cant name half the people they see. But they know who Snoop Dogg is, and they know how to create a myspace site. . Lets get back to the basics in school and teach the kids something that will help. After all, those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. [srtweed2002]

Well...obviously i think kids should go to school till they are 12-14 and then to high school and once they are 18 they should also go to college. People should go to college because education is a must. First you need to have theory knowledge and then you can apply yourself in practical life. [chintan_inc]

I really don't know makes the competition harder if it was mandatory....jobs. [warn810]

It must be a maximum of 18 years before a kid should goto college.AT 15 years kids must finish studies at middle school. Its very tough but it is very effective for kids to learn early than for those to learn late. [deathlord]

Hi well I think we should study up to or death, because every day many new technology are coming so if we know and learn every day it will help us to earn more. [joshua_77]

I think that kids should be able to get all the schooling they can until they are 18 and they should be paid for by the state. I also think that if they are capable they should be able to complete high school. I think that the disabled should be able to be schooled to the level of their abilities. I dont think children should be allowed to quit. I think that if they can take college courses they should be allowed to. All learning should be self paced not restrictive. [msqtech]

It depends on the nation/region/city's policies for education. For example, In most East Asian countries, high school is not required. However, they learn to the same level of "basic knowledge" as Americans do when they finish high school. So basically it means American Education policies stretched the 9-year period to 12. You would see in some countries, financially needy homes usually have their children have jobs right out of middle school... In my opinion, College should remain an option, since it is aimed at more professional areas of study. The student can choose to not attend college and maybe get professional education elsewhere. Monetary issues are also a problem. Also, imagine everyone completing mandatory education levels at 22 years old..some even longer...? [chibiXpudding]
