What To Take In College For A Good Career In A Bad Economy

My son will be graduating High School next year. We are looking into many good universities for him to attend. He wants to study something that will be in demand in a bad economy and that will pay good. He has interests in chemistry, science, mathmatics and he's a very good artist. Any ideas??

I foresee that care of people will always be in demand, so that means the subjects he's good at will be in demand. Does he need to take general education for a while before he set his major? If so let him do that and wait for the world to settle a little. I know that's what my kids did and even though my granddaughter had a full music scholarship she ended with degrees in Language and international business. [savypat]
That might be a good idea to start with just generaL course work. [moneymommy]

Anything is the medical field is a good bet- teaching is probably a good bet as well. I take that back teaching is not a good bet RIGHT NOW but I think it wil be in a couple of years. [alharra]
I agree the medical field is the place to be. [moneymommy]

Good Morning! Well my suggestion would be something in the field of healthcare. Or maybe accounting because accoutants are always neededd, as are doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. My friend is in the coding field in information technology and never has had a hard time finding a job and the job pays awesome, right now she is making over $26 an hour plus benefits AND she works from home. It dont get much better than that!! [caroll30]

Teachers are always in demand, no matter the economy. Also anything with building things and roadwork is fairly safe (so I guess architecture and/or CAD design) And like the other people said, medical is always needed. [WC1989]

This is a difficult one, but I would sit down as a family and brain-storm what would be wanted and needed in a poor economy. But then I would have to be in mind, that the economy will pick up - what would be needed then? I would then sort of have two strings to my bow. Mathematics and finance, will always be in demand as it is the financiers that have still got jobs advising us just how bad things are.. I often wonder if they are saying it is worse than it is, just to keep everything quiet for a while.. Could be wrong though.. sad. Derek [derek_a]

Hi moneymommy. First of all he need to do what he likes. It will be a bad thing if he makes a choice only for money and hate his career. See what he likes and make a choice between it. The economy changes all the time and we never know how it will be in the next four or five years. This crisis comes suddenly without someone notice it and it can occur many times. It will be a risk make a choice based in these days because all can change. He have time to think about it and look for what he likes to do all the life. Have a good day. [teka44]

forget artist, if people have no money they will not buy, unless he plays for a career in graphic art for cinematography, he can't go wrong with chemistry, there is always a need for chemists, testing products, working in hospitals , developing new cures. Engineering is good always, [winterose]

I have read and heard that the future of energy is something that will be big... like changing over the way we use our energy now...and making things more efficient and "green" ...that is one direction to look.. just a suggestion though, I think you really have to have an interest in it first. good luck to him and what he goes into!! follow one's onw interest. since interest is the ever best teacher, and doing a job you are interested in is better payment in return after graduation. [tudors]

Yes I do have an idea. We have a family member who is a certified public accountant. His specialty is taxes. There is always a demand for tax preparers. Another good field is the funeral business. Both fields are necessary to everyone at some point in their lives. Any kind of account does well especially if they are in business for themselves. I would highly recommend either field. I wish him much success in college. [carolbee]

I have to agree with what alot of people have said. The healthcare field and the education field will always be in demand. Pharmaceutical companies are always looking for reseachers, you said he likes chemistry that would be a good match oh and crime labs always need tech's. There is always and need for good math and science teachers as well. [renemouche]
